WASHINGTON, D.C. –Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, cosponsored a Senate resolution that proclaims 2022 as the bicentennial year for the celebration of the birth of President Ulysses S. Grant, a southwest Ohio native born in Point Pleasant on April 27, 1822 and raised in Georgetown. The resolution also designates the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library’s Ulysses S. Grant Association as the official institution for organizing this bicentennial celebration.
“President Grant dedicated his life to service through his distinguished military and Presidential career,” Brown said. “This resolution recognizes his many accomplishments as we begin to plan a bicentennial celebration honoring his birth.”
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Grant joined the United States Army, serving at a variety of military posts, as well as in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. He quickly rose through the ranks during the Civil War and was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to lead the Union Armies. Grant was elected President of the United States in 1868 and served from 1869 to 1877.
