Village of Bethel plans summertime events

Car shows, Redi-fest in the line-up

BETHEL – Bethel school children will benefit from a Redi-Fest if organizer Cindy Shephard has her wish. Shephard informed Bethel council members, Monday, March 27, of plans in the works by PTO representatives to equip children in Bethel with needed school supplies. She gave council members a copy of the letter being sent to area businesses requesting donations for the event, scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 8.

“We will have the county health department on hand to give shots,” said Shephard. “Other county agencies will also be there. We are contacting area churches, the Lions Club and the American Legion to help us by making donations. We have children in the district that need help. We can give them what they need to feel good about going back to school.”

She also told council that plans are being made to have a free kids music event in the park, featuring Zak Morgan. This would be an entirely different event, but dates are not confirmed.

Mayor David Simpson told council members that the Bethel Adult and Youth Recreation Committee is planning the Second Annual Family Day for Saturday, July 22. He invited those in the community who want to be part of the planning to bring their ideas and suggestions to the next meeting scheduled 7 p.m. Monday, April 3, at the Bethel Community Building.

Doug Stacey, organizer of the monthly car shows, asked council if there was any way to block off the street between Main and Cherry streets during the shows. He suggested routing traffic through the village, but was met with opposition because of the possibility of tractor trailers crossing bridges that are already in bad condition.

Mayor Simpson said he would check with Police Chief John Wallace to see if there was an alternate route that could be used.

The first car show is scheduled for the first Sunday in May.

In other business:

• Educational grant applications will be in the schools next week according to John Swarthout, chairman of the Burke Trust Committee. Applicants will be interviewed by council members the third Monday in May.

• Travis Dotson, chair of the Parks and Village Property Committee, reported that several improvements are being made in Burke Park and the Community Center.

• Streets and Sidewalks Committee chair Tim Cherry, reported that bridges around the village will be surveyed and much needed repairs will be planned.

• Clean-up Days for the village are set for Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29. The chipper will be available again this year to help residents dispose of yard debris and pick up free mulch.

• Solicitor George Leicht told council that he has written a resolution to resolve special assessments for utilities at the Shoe Factory Apartments.

• Police Chief John Wallace reported that three candidates for auxiliary officers will be recommended at the next council meeting.

• Village Administrator Mike Shiverski reported that Clermont Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 22. He is currently looking at utility rates to determine the amount of the increase.

• Councilman Kevin Perkins reported that the meeting with the Tate Township Trustees was not productive. They would not schedule a regular meeting date with council.

• The staff at the Bethel Museum encourage residents to visit the museum. They are open the first Saturday of each month.
