GEORGETOWN - The Southern Ohio Veteran's Home dining hall was packed with residents and family members alike to watch the start of the home's annual Veteran's Day celebration on Nov. 9.
After the program, veterans were treated to a number of games, events, and meals as well as visits from General Electric Jet Engine Plant workers product, development, and delivery team who volunteered to help with the event.
The day started off with a ceremony organized by Southern Ohio Veterans Home staff and General Electric volunteers. With a bagpipe performance from Alexander Watt from the Hamilton County Sheriff Pipe and Drum Corps, and Emilee Saiter's performance of the National Anthem, the ceremony was a great way to thank veterans for the time and energy they put forth while in the service.
The General Electric volunteers also invited the Disabled American Veterans of Fairfield to the event. The Disabled American Veterans provided their services as the color guard for the ceremony.
Deputy Superintendent George Kinney at the Veterans Home felt the ceremony went extremely well and thanked the volunteers from General Electric, as well as the Fairfield Disabled American Veterans for their work in making the program great.
"I think it was wonderful," Kinney said. "The group brought presents for each resident and spent time with them. They have asked to come back to do this annually."
Also at the Nov. 9 ceremony, Kinney announced the new additions to the memorial brick walkway around the General Grant statue, as well as unveiled the new stones in the home's walking trail that list the names of all the residents who died at the home from the previous year.
The names on the walking trail stones will be officially announced on Memorial Day 2008.
