Georgetown volleyball squad falls to Fenwick in SW District Division III final

An impressive post season tournament run reached an end for the Georgetown High School varsity volleyball squad, Oct. 27. The Georgetown Lady G-Men ventured to Tippecanoe High School on Oct. 27 to face Bishop Fenwick in the Southwest District Division III championship match. The Lady G-Men suffered losses in three straight sets, as the Bishop Fenwick Lady Falcons won the match to advance to regional play.

In set one of the district finale it was the Lady G-Men falling 25-6. The Lady G-Men suffered a 25-4 loss in set two, and it was the Lady Falcons taking the match with a 25-12 win in set three.

The Lady G-Men wrapped up their 2012 season with an overall record of 12-12.

After finishing their regular season tied for third place in the Southern Buckeye Conference small school division with a 6-4 league record, the Lady G-Men heated up late in the season to claim a sectional title and finish second in the district. On Oct. 20, they faced the East Clinton Lady Astros in the Southwest District Division III Sectional championship at Blanchester High School, winning a sectional title in a match that lasted four sets. The Lady G-Men managed a 25-17 victory in set one of the sectional tourney match, and they went on to pull off a narrow 26-24 victory in set two to take a 2-0 match lead.

After the Lady Astros won set three 25-17, the determined Lady G-Men rebounded to claim a 25-19 victory in set four to win the match.

The Lady G-Men earned a berth in the sectional finals after defeating Waynesville in an Oct. 18 match that took five sets for a winner to be determined. The Lady G-Men managed a 25-21 lead in set one against Waynesville, but the squad of Waynesville responded by claiming a 25-21 victory in set two. With the match tied at one apiece, it was the Lady G-Men taking a narrow 27-25 victory in a hard-fought set three. It was Waynesville tying the match with a 25-23 win in set four. In the fifth and deciding set to 15 points, the Lady G-Men came out on top 15-11.






Entering the Southwest District Division III finals at Tippecanoe High School Oct. 27, the Lady G-Men held an overall record of 12-11. The Lady G-Men consist of a dedicated coaching staff with head coach Donna Devries at the wheel and by her side assistant/JV head coach Kathy Chadwell, and a hard working crew of varsity players that include four seniors - Abby West, Jesse Kidwell, Kaelyn Jordan, and Paige Luck; three juniors - Allison Kistler, Hannah Lillich and Meranda Sullivan; four sophomores - Ally Dowd, Carlee Ellis, Kennedy Ecker and Morgan Gast; and two freshmen - Bayley Johnson and Miranda Wallace.

The sectional championship win over East Clinton marked the sixth straight victory for the much improved Georgetown varsity squad, a team that lost five straight matches in the midst of the regular season and at one point in the season held a record of 4-10. They ended the season by winning eight of their last 10 matches.

Kidwell finished with 323 kills and 17 blocks on the season, while Jordan ended her season with 186 kills and 17 blocks. Gast finished the season with 510 assists, 57 kills and three blocks.

Dowd ended the season with 72 kills. Sullivan racked up 56 kills during the 2012 season to go along with six assists and three blocks, while Wallace finished with 21 kills, 32 assists and eight blocks.

The Bishop Fenwick Lady Falcons held an overall record of 13-12. No team has come close to defeating the Lady Falcons thus far in post season play. They would get home court advantage in the sectional tournament at Bishop Fenwick High School. They drew a bye in round one, and in round two they defeated Cincinnati North College Hill in a match that lasted three sets with set scores of 25-2, 25-7 and 25-4.

In the sectional final at Bishop Fenwick High School, it was the Lady Falcons defeating Camden Preble Shawnee in a match that lasted three sets with set scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-6.
