The Georgetown Exempted Village School Board of Education continued their monthly custom of honoring students in November, and this month’s theme is “caring.”

Superintendent Chris Burrows invited the students and their families to attend the monthly board meeting, which in this instance was held in the Georgetown High School cafeteria, and Burrows asked each student to stand while reading off their nomination for their honor, before the crowd gave each student a round of applause. The students honored were Kylie Morris, Taivon Taylor, Elise Tracy, Gabriella Roy, Avery Adams, Regan Gable, Sierra Ingram, and Ashley Brandenburg.

“These young men and ladies have exhibited the value, the characteristic, the asset, of caring. They’ve gone above and beyond each and every day,” Burrows said.

Burrows thanked the parents for helping raise their children to be great students.

“I say this almost every month, the greatest investment we can make is in our children, as parents, as a community, as a school system, and as a country,” Burrows said. “If we invest in our children, then our future is going to be bright.”

In addition to the students, Georgetown Elementary School teacher Rachel Bishop and Georgetown High School cafeteria cook Tricia Wilmoth were honored with the staff apple award.

Following the presentations from Burrows, Georgetown Elementary School first grade teacher Evelyn Arthur gave a presentation to the board of education about Project More, a mentoring program with some of her first grade students and both middle school students and high school students.

The mentors and students all received thank you cards and took a photo together in the cafeteria.

Next, Georgetown High School teacher Chad McKibben updated the board of education on the advisory period at Georgetown Junior Senior High School, in which talented students take time out of their school day to either mentor younger students or make a difference in the community.

This group of advisory period students were the ones who cleaned up the Brown County Fairgrounds the day after the fair as well as raked leaves outside homes in Georgetown.

Georgetown teachers Carrie Hudson and Jill Scott then updated the board of education on the use of the Iris Connect software, which allows educators to tape their lectures in school, as well as provide feedback afterwards.

Lastly, before the board of education entered into their usual business, they heard a presentation from Georgetown High School student Lorrin Hrack, who went on a business and marketing trip to Chicago.

“It was one of the best adventures, experiences, trips of my entire life,” Hrack told the board of education. “I absolutely loved it and it taught me a lot. I thought I wanted to go into marketing at the beginning of it, but I don’t want to go into marketing now. I want to go into management.”

Heading into their regular course of action in their monthly meeting, the board of education approved a memorandum of understanding with the Georgetown Federation of Teachers regarding use of value added data.

The board of education approved a field trip to Chicago, Ill. for gifted and talented students. The board of education also went into executive session to discuss personnel matters.

When they returned to regular session, the board of education approved hiring two certified substitute teachers, Linda Maddex and Abigail Blount, and two uncertified substitutes, Michelle Moye, a substitute educational aide, and Robert Aker, a substitute custodian.

The board of education also approved Tracy Hawkins to a one-year limited supplemental contract to be prom advisor and approved Richard Colwell to be a volunteer assistant coach for the 2015/2016 school year.
