Garth Shanklin has joined the staff of The News Democrat and The Ripley Bee as the Sports Editor.

A native of Williamsburg, the 2011 Western Brown graduate spent the last four years pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Communication at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.

Shanklin’s time at Bradley included four years on the production crew responsible for the in-arena and online streams of Bradley Braves athletic events. He served as on-air talent for the university’s softball, baseball, volleyball and soccer teams throughout his four years at the school.

Shanklin was named the sports editor of the Bradley Scout in December 2013, the university’s student newspaper. In this role, he interviewed former NFL player Marcus Pollard, current Los Angeles Dodger and ESPN broadcaster Charley Steiner and other former Braves who made a mark in the sporting world.

“Garth’s wealth of sports knowledge and experience in the media will be an asset to our newspapers,” said editor Mark Carpenter. “Our coverage of local sports will continue to expand and grow under Garth’s leadership.”
